The morning of September 11, 2001 started off with beautiful sky and warm weather and then our lives were changed forever.
Recovering from a heart attack several weeks before, I wasn’t allowed to go help as many of my friends and colleagues did. I did little things like cover at an EMT class for an instructor friend, transfer some supplies, anything to be useful. Later that day, my husband said he was divorcing me and 4 days after that, my long time job was terminated as the company was forced to close. Like many Americans, I was hurt and lost during this mayhem. And so frustrated at not being able to do more.
Exactly one week later, my home guild, East Side Quilters, held their monthly meeting which included the annual challenge. That years’ challenge was to create a quilt based on name of song or book. I hadn’t gotten to the project as was so busy with life. The morning of the meeting, decided I desperately needed a small distraction and created the attached based on “Fly like an Eagle” song. Many of the fabrics I used I had hand dyed and it was my first time to try machine quilting (feathers in wings). But most of all, it was a tribute to September 11, 2001 and remains precious to me – as symbol of endurance.
Such a beautiful quilt made as a symbol of overcoming life’s harshness. God bless you as you continue to persevere. I admire your long suffering and strength.
